The history of the University of Science and Technology Beijing can be traced back to the first mining and metallurgy discipline in modern Chinese history, which was founded by the Beiyang Western Learning School in 1895. In 1952, the school was formed by the mining and metallurgy departments of six famous domestic universities, including Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University) and Tsinghua University, and was named Beijing Iron and Steel Industry Institute. It was the first higher education institution in the iron and steel industry established in New China. In 1960, it was renamed Beijing Iron and Steel Institute and was approved as a national key university. In 1984, it became one of the first universities in the country to formally establish a graduate school. In 1988, it was renamed Beijing University of Science and Technology. In May 1997, the school was among the first batch of universities to enter the ranks of the national "211 Project" construction universities. In 2006, the school became one of the first universities to build an innovation platform for advantageous disciplines in the "985 Project". In 2014, the "Steel Common Technology Collaborative Innovation Center" led by the school, with Beijing University of Science and Technology and Northeastern University as core universities, was successfully selected into the national "2011 Plan". In 2017, the school was selected as a national "Double First-Class" construction university. In 2018, the school was approved as a university jointly built by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Education. At present, the school has developed into a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, with engineering as the main discipline and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, science, management, literature, economics, and law. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, the school has gradually formed a fine tradition of "rigorous academic style and advocating practice", and has trained more than 260,000 talents of various types for the society, many of whom have become pillars and backbones in the fields of national politics, economy, science and technology, education, especially in the metallurgical and materials industries. Party and state leaders such as Luo Gan, Liu Qi, Xu Kuangdi, Huang Mengfu, Fan Changlong, Guo Shengkun, and Liu Xiaofeng have all studied at the school. Another 41 alumni have been elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering. A large number of alumni have taken up important leadership positions in large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises such as Baowu, BAIC, Hesteel, Chalco, and First Heavy Industries. The school is known as the "cradle of steel." The school's headquarters is located on Xueyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing, where many universities are gathered. The school covers an area of ​​about 803,900 square meters and the total building area of ​​the school is 941,100 square meters. The school currently has 1 national science center, 1 "2011 Plan" collaborative innovation center, 2 national key laboratories, 2 national engineering (technology) research centers, 2 national science and technology basic conditions platforms, 1 national science and technology resource sharing service platform, 2 national international science and technology cooperation bases, 1 national safety supervision and inspection science and technology support project, 64 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, engineering research centers, international cooperation bases, and innovation and intelligence bases. In particular, in 2007, the school, as the first university directly under the Ministry of Education, took the lead in undertaking a major national scientific and technological infrastructure project - the major engineering material service safety research and evaluation facility, and was responsible for the preparation of the National Material Service Safety Science Center. The library has a physical collection of more than 2.479 million volumes (items). It regularly publishes important academic journals such as "International Journal of Minerals, Metallurgy and Materials", "Journal of Engineering Science", "Journal of Beijing University of Science and Technology (Social Science Edition)", "Ideological Education Research", "Logistics Technology and Application", "Metal World", and "Powder Metallurgy Technology". The academic level of the four national first-level key disciplines of the school, namely metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, mining engineering, and history of science and technology, is well-known both at home and abroad (entered the ranks of national world-class disciplines in 2017; in the fourth round of discipline evaluation, metallurgical engineering and history of science and technology were rated A+, and materials science and engineering were rated A). A number of disciplines such as safety science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, control science and engineering, power engineering and engineering thermal physics, mechanical engineering, computer science and technology, civil engineering, chemistry, foreign languages ​​and literature, management science and engineering, business administration, and Marxist theory have strong strengths. Basic disciplines and interdisciplinary disciplines such as mechanics, physics, mathematics, information and communication engineering, instrument science and technology, nanomaterials and device physics, and optoelectronic information materials and devices are full of vitality. In 2019, safety science and engineering and artificial intelligence science and engineering were selected as high-end disciplines for Beijing universities. As of the end of 2021, there are more than 26,000 full-time students, including 13,732 undergraduates, 12,506 postgraduates of various types (including 8,589 master's students and 3,917 doctoral students), 760 international students, and 15,958 students in academic continuing education. A multi-level and relatively complete talent training system for postgraduate education, full-time undergraduate, higher vocational education and continuing education has been formed. The school has a rigorous faculty. From 1978 to 2021, a total of 10,875 patents were applied for and 7,002 patents were authorized; more than 2,000 scientific research results have won various awards at the national, provincial, ministerial and other levels, including 182 national awards. In 1999, the Ministry of Education compiled a list of "China's Higher Education Institutions' 50 Years of Science and Technology Award-winning Major Achievements" that included 12 major scientific research achievements of the University of Science and Technology Beijing, ranking among the top universities in the country. The school's scientific research achievements in "Structure and Toughness Research of Bulk Amorphous Alloys" and "Interface Control of One-Dimensional Zinc Oxide and Basic Research on Its Application" have made major scientific contributions in the fields of basic research and applied basic research. In recent years, the school's "Research and Practice on the Efficient Transformation of Open-pit to Underground Construction of Large-scale Digital Underground Metal Mines", "Research and Application of Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking Composite Blowing Technology", "Innovation and Industrialization of Key Technologies for Complex Component Strategic Metal Regeneration", "Near-net Shape Manufacturing Technology and Application of High-performance Special Powder Materials" and other large scientific research achievements have played an important role in the construction of the national economy and achieved huge economic and social benefits. The school continues to expand its social service field and development space, and has signed comprehensive cooperation agreements with more than 190 provincial, municipal and district governments and large enterprises and institutions in China. At the same time, the school aims at the forefront of the world and strengthens international cooperation.
